Sensitron and Bridge Medical Collaborate on Wireless Technology for Increased Patient Safety

SAN MATEO, Calif.Dec. 13, 2004 – Sensitron, Inc., a wireless healthcare innovations company, and Bridge Medical, a patient safety software and services company and subsidiary of AmerisourceBergen, are collaborating on product solutions that enable safer and more efficient patient care.

Sensitron and Bridge Medical have signed an agreement to jointly develop software that will enable consistent and reliable inter-operation of Bridge’s MedPoint™ point-of-care software and Sensitron’s careTrends™ Wireless Bridge. The collaboration seeks to develop a patient safety solution that can be used with a variety of devices from a variety of medical device vendors. As a result, hospitals are ensured greater freedom in selecting medical devices appropriate for their unique care environments.

“Patient safety is one of the key drivers for hospitals to embrace innovative wireless solutions like ours,” said Rajiv Jaluria, CEO and president of Sensitron. “Another important driver is reducing capital expenditures. By using solutions from Sensitron and Bridge Medical, hospitals will be able to safely reduce the cost of healthcare because they can integrate a variety of new and existing devices such as monitors and infusion pumps with the MedPoint system for a smarter and safer process.”

Through a combination of wireless Bluetooth and 802.11b communications protocols, Sensitron’s careTrends Wireless Bridge enables a wide array of clinical data to be captured and transmitted wirelessly, via secure encryption, to a server-based electronic patient record of choice. Potential errors in data transmission are reduced by dating and timing all data, which creates an effective audit trail. The system directly links point-of-care medical devices with clinical information systems, thus reducing time, clinical risk and allowing clinical staff to maintain a higher standard of care.

Bridge’s MedPoint system uses bar-code technology and point-of-care computing devices to verify the five rights of medication administration (right drug, right patient, right dose, right time, and right route of administration), alert nurses to look-alike and sound-alike medications, as well as high-risk medications, provide age and weight-based dosing parameters for sensitive pediatric and geriatric patients, offer medication allergy checks and to check many other essential clinical rules.  The partnership between Sensitron and Bridge offers the potential to acquire information from a broad array of medical devices and transmit this information to MedPoint, so that the caregiver can be armed with a complete view of the patient's status at the bedside enabling a better assessment of the patient's overall health and safety.

The non-exclusive agreement between Sensitron and Bridge Medical solidifies their co-development relationship, which will be applied to future healthcare solutions. The agreement also allows the two companies to promote and market each other’s products to medical equipment manufacturers and healthcare facilities.
